About Brainerd, MN
Population Center and Crow Wing County Seat
Brainerd, population of about 14,000, lies in the heart of a metropolitan area of 90,000 in the “Brainerd Lakes Region.” Early U.S. explorer Zebulon Pike traversed the Brainerd area in Ojibwe Territory early in the 1800s while looking for the source of the Mississippi. By the second half of the 1800s John Gregory Smith, president of the Northern Pacific Railway, was developing a bridge across the Mississippi just north of Crow Wing Village. He named the township and emerging community by the Mississippi “Brainerd” after his father-in-law, Lawrence Brainerd, and established the railroad’s headquarters there in 1870, the year of founding (formally incorporated in 1873). This transcontinental railroad would connect the Great Lakes to the Pacific Coast by 1883.
A City Connected
Today strategic connections to the city are via Minnesota State Highways 18, 25, 210, and 371. Aitkin, Crosby, Garrison, Little Falls, Motley, and Staples are all within a half hour’s drive of Brainerd. Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Grand Rapids, Minneapolis, St. Cloud, and Wadena are an hour to two hours away, depending on destination. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the successor to the Northern Pacific, continues to provide rail traffic but ceased to be the primary employer for the city about a century ago.
Gateway to the North
Minnesota lakes and waters (460 lakes within just a 25-mile radius) and topography resulting from major glaciation of the last Ice Age draw tourists with fishing, water sports, biking and hiking, and camping three seasons of the year. Snowmobiling and cross-country and downhill skiing round out the tourist seasons.
