Orthodontic Fact #10 The first ever certified orthodontist in the United States is Dr. Charles Tweed from the late 18th century
In 1925, future orthodontist Charles Tweed was refused admittance to the Angle School of Orthodontics in Pasadena., California. He was told that he needed to take orthodontics more seriously. He was accepted to the school on his second application. Some years later, Charles Tweed would advance orthodontics by improving on the Angle School’s techniques, and carve a place in history for himself and the orthodontic world.
Dr. Angle believed strongly that teeth should never be extracted before the placement of orthodontic appliances, but Dr. Tweed eventually broke this rule because he was unhappy with the results of orthodontics for many of his patients. He saw both unstable teeth and unattractive smiles as the result of his work. While taking criticism from many other orthodontists, Dr. Tweed decided to experiment by planning and carrying out tooth extractions on some of his patients to help the fit and effectiveness of their orthodontic appliances. His method proved to be a great success, and today Charles Tweed is a highly respected name in the practice of orthodontics.
Today’s orthodontists routinely extract teeth to make braces or other orthodontic appliances fit correctly. Each case is unique, and an orthodontist must carefully examine each patient and plan a course of orthodontic treatment for that individual.
Patients today have many choices in orthodontic treatment, from traditional braces to Invisalign aligners. Invisalign are a great choice for teens and adults who primarily need straightening of their front teeth. Sometimes braces are a better choice, or they can be necessary in cases where the bite needs to be corrected.
