Tooth brushing Mistake No.9: Not Letting the Toothbrush Dry

mcdermott-tbm9Not Letting the Toothbrush Dry

Brushing our teeth is so common that we seldom think much about it. We put a dab of toothpaste on the bristles and brush, then return the toothbrush to its storage place. While it may seem that toothbrushes require little care, the truth is that your toothbrush should be dry when you put it away. Allowing it to be stored while damp encourages the growth of bacteria, which will then be applied to your teeth at the next brushing. Those who wear braces for orthodontic treatment, even Invisalign, which is nearly invisible, must be extra careful to brush safely, as wired teeth are harder to clean, giving bacteria in hard-to-reach areas an extra boost to grow harmful organisms. If your orthodontist hasn’t already explained how to dry your toothbrush, here are three suggestions.

Let it sit out.

Letting your toothbrush sit out in the open air on the bathroom sink for thirty minutes or so will help to dry up any dampness left after brushing. Check the bristles to ensure they are dry before putting your toothbrush away.

Wipe with a dry cloth.

A clean, damp washcloth or paper towel can remove moisture from a toothbrush. Wipe the brush carefully and thoroughly before placing it in a drawer or airtight container for storage.

Use a hair dryer.

A hand-held hair dryer set to cool air or warm air can quickly dry a toothbrush within a few moments. Be sure the dampness is gone, as the hair dryer’s heat can foster the growth of remaining bacteria that thrive in moisture.
